Today (11/17.10) is World GIS Day! This day is part of the celebrations to promote Geography Awareness Week a geographic literacy initiative sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
GIS day events will be held in 59 countries across the world.
So…what is this GIS thing anyway - you should know if you are visiting this blog, but I'll humor you anyways :) Geographic information systems (GIS) or geospatial information systems is a set of tools that captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that are linked to location ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographic_information_system)
Simply put, GIS touches our world (excuse the pun) and this week is a celebration of all geography/GIS related . We either take GIS for granted or don’t know what is (or care!) but whether you know it or not it is highly likely that some form of GIS technology has been used directly or indirectly to help plan, manage or create everything around you. From the in car navigation systems to logistics planning for supermarket deliveries. From natural resource management to iPhone photograph mapping (try it)
Did you know that Autodesk has really incredible GIS technology, solutions and customer stories? (www.autodesk.com/gis)
To celebrate GIS Day, Subject Matter experts from Autodesk - Michael Schlosser , Neal Niemiec and Pete Southwood have created a short on demand webcast entitled ‘Information Modeling for the GIS Professional’or BIM for GIS at www.autodesk.com/bimforgis.
I encourage you to check these out, tweet, blog and retweet about it all to help us celebrate World GIS Day!
