Today I felt like bringing up a highly talked about subject in the mapping world - raster files. We love them, we hate them, but at the end of the day we need them for almost all of the work we do in the GIS and engineering worlds.
One particular issue I have been hearing a lot about recently is Raster Draw Order in Map 3D or Civil 3D.
Here are some troubleshooting steps to help when working with your rasters in these programs:
How are you connecting to the raster file? Image Insert or Data Connect?
If Image Insert -
- Send your raster file to the back (select the frame of the image and right click)
- Set a transparency to the raster to see 'through' it
- Check your DRAWORDERCTL variable - it should be set to 3. It controls the default display behavior of overlapping objects when they are created or edited.
- Check your TREEDEPTH variable. If it is set to 0, then it trumps all other draw order controls in the drawing.
If Data Connect -
- Check Draw Order in your Display Manager, make sure your raster file is at the bottom of the list
- Turn the raster FDO layer off and back on again using the checkbox*.
*One known issue with this method is in Map 3D 2010 with Update 2 or Map 3D 2011 is if you turn off the checkbox for raster FDO layers, it will be ignored when you reopen drawings. So you will need to turn them on/off in each session of the DWG.
- If neither of the above work, try starting a new DWG file and add in your raster and vector data
